PostSubject: Hey from Forks, WA   Hey from Forks, WA EmptySun 5 Aug 2012 - 22:02

Hi!
I am new here but have been reborning for just over 3 years, I'm self taught from what I've figured out on my own and here and there on the internet. I live in a tiny town on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. I'm about an hour and half from anywhere and making and baking babies is a great hobby when you live somewhere that it rains 200+ days of the year. Plus, it's a hobby that has been paying for itself which is a bonus since I work in childcare which doesn't pay that great. :) Anyway, glad to be here and can't wait to learn some new tricks and hopefully take a class or two!

Thank you both for the welcome!

lol yes Twilight has taken over... it seems to be dying down some this summer though with Hunger Games becoming the new big thing... which is nice, I do love my little town when it's a little more on the quite side that it was just after the books hit it big. :)

Thank you for the compliment, I really love making the dolls so it's nice to know I'm doing okay at it as well. bigsmile

I love your siggy baby, I am fighting buying that kit until I get some of my hoard down...

Aww thanks Barb!

I did that with Bluebell by Romie Strydom... that kit reminded me so much of my niece when she was a baby that I had to have it then I couldn't bring myself to do it forever then when I finished I had a horrible time letting her go!

Kerri, I just heard about the big fire in Forks through my spinning newsletter. Did that affect you at all?

It only burned down two buildings that housed one store, the community theater and the closed Twilight store. It was sad because the buildings were extremely old landmarks but no one was hurt, the little Mexican Grocer and the Theater are without homes for the moment though and the store lost everything... I'm not sure if they had insurance either. I know the community players are bummed because they just put a bunch of money they had raised into getting the theater fixed up. I'm glad though that it didn't spread as there is a family that has their home just feet from the back of one of the buildings, the pharmacy is right there too... it was right in the middle of town.

I'm glad that no one was hurt in the fire. That would be discouraging to have just put money into fixing up something and have it burn down! My spinning newsletter said that 12 spinning wheels and 14 weaving looms were in the arts center in the community theater. That is great that it didn't spread to more of the other businesses.

Yeah, the town came out of it much luckier than we could have because it had been really dry here for the last few weeks (I know crazy for one of the rainiest places in the US) leading up to the fire but thankfully it was raining when it happened and the wind from the night before had died down. I didn't know about the spinning stuff but it doesn't surprise me, there are a lot of crafty people here, you kind of have to find indoor activities during our cold, dark, rainy winters.

Our town though is great about pulling together when there is a need so I'm sure we'll have the arts center up and running again before too awful long. When I had cancer 2 years ago someone threw a donation bake sale because we have no insurance and I couldn't work, it raised just over $1200 in 4 hours... that level of caring is rare these days and why I love living in this town. We made it through the winter (my hubby works sawing shingles and can't work much in winter either) and got me back and forth to my doctors 4 hours away with that money and now I have a clean bill of health... if I lived in a larger city, that wouldn't have happened... so I have faith that with some work by a few of us that we can get things back in order for the people that use the arts center!

That is awesome about the community support! How small is "small" population wise?

That is fairly small. I think my town is smaller and we have about 3 times that many people!

lol Matt (hubs) thinks it's fine that I make them as long as they don't cost him anything AND that I don't take them out if he is with me. He thinks I'm crazy though for buying so much stuff and having a room full of doll stuff.

My husband & I have an agreement; I don't complain about all his hunting expenses and how crazy it seems to me (hiding in the woods, in the dark, just waiting & waiting & waiting.....) & he doesn't complain about my babies and their expenses, even tho he doesn't understand it either wink

So it works out just fine lol
